People
spend billions of dollars on home exercise equipment and health
club memberships yet the drop out rate from regular physical activity
remains alarmingly high. Do you fall into this category of people
who tend to not exercise much but seem to feel guilty about it?
Here are ten of the biggest mistakes people make in their pursuit
to become a regular exerciser along with a solution.
10
Biggest Fitness Mistakes and their Solutions
One
The
failure to create proper mental and emotional associations with
exercise.
Solution:
Create proper mental and emotional associations through keeping
positive thoughts and visualizing a place that is pleasurable
to you and bringing that to your exercise every time.
Two
Unrealistic expectations and goals.
Solution:
Begin by creating realistic expectations...have a time frame that
is realistic and an understanding that it will be somewhere between
8 and 12 weeks before you see true physiological changes.
Three
The failure to associate with successful role models.
Solution:
Make a conscious effort to have a support system whether it's
formal (friends and family) or an informal group that will be
there to help you through your program.
Four
and Five
More is better philosophy and lack of understanding of intensity
level.
Solution:
Understand that there is a particular level of intensity of exercise
and understanding the ACSM guidelines and if you follow them it
will give you the best possible benefit.
Six
People are not good time managers.
Solution:
Create a time management worksheet that will help you identify
your priorities and to affix your priorities with your time so
you can make time for what is important to you.
Seven
People do not support exercise with proper nutrition.
Solution:
Follow the food pyramid...have a balance of food. Make sure you're
eating enough and the right things to support your activity level.
Eight
Lack of consistency with an exercise program.
Solution:
Learn to accept physical activity as part of your day. Keep your
workout time to a manageable level so it fits into your life without
disrupting it.
Nine
The lack of variety in your program or not changing your workout
when you have reached a plateau for fear of lack of progress.
Solution:
Change your program on a regular basis...try new things so your
program doesn't become stale and you continue to get results.
Ten
People do not have fun with exercise.
Solution:
Try a lot of different activities to find ones you enjoy. Remember
exercise does not have to be walking on a treadmill...it can be
any kind of activity you enjoy that has some intensity to it.
